Michael Hill International Violin Competition 2009 Repertoire

Please note that Competitors should not repeat the same composer in their overall repertoire selection. For example, competitors may only select either a Brahms Sonata OR a Brahms Trio OR the Brahms Violin Concerto for their program. Exceptions to this rule are: 1)   Any repertoire can be repeated between preliminary and subsequent rounds; 2)   A virtuoso work by Paganini is allowable in addition to the required Paganini Caprice.

Semi-final Round 1 Repertoire
25 minutes, 18 Competitors

Competitors must choose from the following categories:

Category A
A selection from the following Bach: Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas

  1. Adagio and Fuga from Sonata No 1 in G minor
  2. Grave and Fuga from Sonata No 2 in A minor
  3. Adagio and Fuga from Sonata No 3 in C major
  4. Allemanda, Double, Corrente and Double from Partita No 1 in B minor
  5. Ciaccona from Partita No 2 in D minor
  6. Preludio, Loure, Gavotte en Rondeau and MenuetI and II from Partita No 3 in E

Category B
One of the following first movements from Mozart’s concerti with piano accompaniment. All are to be played with Cadenza. Competitors are encouraged to supply their own Cadenza.

  1. Allegro from Concerto No 3 in G major KV 216
  2. Allegro from Concerto No 4 in D major KV 218
  3. Allegro Aperto from Concerto No 5 in A major KV 219

Semi-final Round 2 Repertoire
40 minutes, 18 Competitors

Competitors must choose from the following categories:

Category A
Two Caprices from Op 1 of Paganini. Only one to be performed. Judges will inform competitor which one is to be played at the conclusion of Round 1.

Category B
Two contrasting movements from one of the following Sonatas with Piano. Selections should be less than 20 minutes duration.

  1. Beethoven Sonata No 5 in F, Op 24
  2. Beethoven Sonata No 7 in C minor, Op 30 No 2
  3. Beethoven Sonata No 8 in G major, Op 30 No 3
  4. Beethoven Sonata No 10 in G major, Op 96
  5. Brahms Sonata No 1 in G major, Op 78
  6. Brahms Sonata No 2 in A major, Op 100
  7. Brahms Sonata No 3 in D minor, Op 108
  8. Debussy Sonata for Violin and Piano
  9. Fauré Sonata in A major, Op 13
  10. Franck Sonata in A major
  11. Prokofieff Sonata No 1 in F minor
  12. Prokofieff Sonata No 2 in D major
  13. Ravel Sonata for Violin and Piano

Category C
A piece for violin solo especially commissioned by New Zealand composer, Gareth Farr (maximum 5 minutes duration). This work is available on 1 April 2009.

Category D
One virtuoso work of own choice form the 19th or 20th century (approximately 10 minutes duration). As a guide, the following composers' works are acceptable: Saint-Saens, Paganini, Waxman, Tchaikovsky, Bazzini, Sarasate, Wieniawski, Ysaye. This should not be considered a complete list but final approval of repertoire will be given upon acceptance in the Michael Hill International Violin Competition.

Competitors will perform a complete performance of one of the following piano trios:
  1. Beethoven Trio in D major Op 70 No 1 ("The Ghost")
  2. Brahms Trio Op 101 No 3 in C Minor
  3. Ravel Trio for piano, violin and violoncello
  4. Dvorak, Trio No 4 in E minor Op 90 ("Dumky")
