I really enjoyed listening to the high calibre of contestants for the Michael Hill International Violin Competition. It was hard to get down to 18, and I expect it to be a tough job for those in Queenstown. Congrats to all who entered.

The standard of applicant just keeps getting better every year, and I am personally looking forward to collaborating with the three violinists that make it to the finals and perform concertos with the APO next year.

As has been the case since its inception, the Michael Hill International Violin Competion is of exceptionally high standard and the qualifying round this December 2006 was not any different. We saw a record number of entries of very high calibre players from all over the world, which was exciting but made the selection a tough task for the panel. We now look forward to the next stage of the Competion later next year in 2007, which promises to be a truly great event.

Having been with the competition from its very beginning, I am continually impressed by its progression. The sheer number of applicants this year was really encouraging and will make for an even more robust semi-finals next year.
I'm really excited to hear them live in Queenstown and Auckland next year - that's really where they come into their own!

It was a pleasure to work with an all star team of New Zealand Violinists for three days during the competition’s semi finalists selection round. The Panel was very pleased with the overall standard of applicants and welcomes the semi finalists to New Zealand in June 2007 for the next stage in this important international violin competition.

In overall the level of playing varied, but at the same time it was practically impossible to rank the top players, which obviously is a good sign when thinking about the next two rounds. All 18 accepted to the semi finals are wonderful young talents. The international judges will have a difficult job in choosing the prize winners. It is a great cultural achievement to have such a high level competition in New Zealand and I'm thrilled that I had the opportunity to be part of it this time.
