The opening session will present an overview of the Competition and Michael Hill himself will present a personal account of his aspirations for the competition. Most importantly, the judging process will be at the heart of this presentation. What will the competitors need to do to become this year’s winner? What exactly are the judges looking for?

Recently-appointed Concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic, Josef has been invited back by popular demand for a bonus concert for Queentown's Competition enthusiasts. He and Sarah perform a beautifully crafted one hour recital which follows the inaugural   INSIDER'S GUIDE    and finishes with a surprise ending.

18 international rising stars are put through their paces in the grueling first round with works by Bach and Mozart where the performers' skills of extreme technical clarity and transparent delicacy are critically important.

This demanding round tests the 18 violinists in their interpretative abilities with sonatas from the Romantic era and NZ composer John Psathas' specifically-commissioned Gyftiko. You will then be thrilled by the fiery "show pieces" that display the competitors' technical wizardry.

Each competitor has the opportunity to show their full range of virtuosity and musicianship in this round. Hear about the myriad of challenges posed to the competitors in these devilish Paganini caprices and what to listen out for. The Naked Violin (Auckland)

Three exquisite finalists perform full concerti with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Arvo Volmer.
