Please note that Competitors should not repeat the same composer in their overall repertoire selection. For example, competitors may only select either a Brahms Sonata OR the Brahms Violin Concerto for their program. Exceptions to this rule are:
1) Any repertoire can be repeated between application and semi-final rounds;
2) A virtuoso work by Paganini is allowable in addition to the required Paganini Caprice.

Semi-final Round I Repertoire
25 minutes, 18 Competitors
Competitors must choose from the following categories:
Category A
A selection from the following Bach: Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas
- Adagio and Fuga from Sonata No 1 in G minor
- Grave and Fuga from Sonata No 2 in A minor
- Adagio and Fuga from Sonata No 3 in C major
- Allemanda, Double, Corrente and Double from Partita No 1 in B minor
- Ciaccona from Partita No 2 in D minor
- Preludio, Loure, Gavotte en Rondeau and Menuet I and II from Partita No 3 in E major
Category B
One of the following first movements from Mozart’s concerti with piano accompaniment. All are to be played with Cadenza. Competitors are encouraged to supply their own Cadenza.
- Allegro from Concerto No 3 in G major KV 216
- Allegro from Concerto No 4 in D major KV 218
- Allegro Aperto from Concerto No 5 in A major KV 219
Semi-final Round II Repertoire
40 minutes, 18 Competitors
Competitors must choose from the following categories:
Category A
Two Caprices from Op 1 of Paganini. Only one to be performed. Jury will inform competitor which one is to be played at the conclusion of Round I.
Category B
Two contrasting movements from one of the following Sonatas with Piano. Selections should be less than 20 minutes duration.
- Beethoven Sonata No 5 in F Op 24
- Beethoven Sonata No 7 in C minor Op 30 No 2
- Beethoven Sonata No 8 in G major Op 30 No 3
- Beethoven Sonata No 10 in G major Op 96
- Brahms Sonata No 1 in G major Op 78

- Debussy Sonata for Violin and Piano
- Fauré Sonata in A major, Op 13

Category C
A piece for violin solo especially commissioned by New Zealand composer, John Psathas (maximum 5 minutes duration). This work is available on 1 April 2011.
Category D
One virtuoso work of own choice form the 19th or 20th century (approximately 10 minutes duration). As a guide, the following composers' works are acceptable: Saint-Saens, Paganini, Waxman, Tchaikovsky, Bazzini, Sarasate, Wieniawski, Ysaye. This should not be considered a complete list and final approval of repertoire will be given upon acceptance in the Michael Hill International Violin Competition.
Round III Repertoire

Competitors will give a complete performance of one of the following piano trios:
- Beethoven Trio in D major Op 70 No 1 ("The Ghost")
- Schumann Trio No 1 in D minor Op 63
- Ravel Trio for piano, violin and violoncello
- Dvořák Trio No 4 in E minor Op 90 ("Dumky")
