One of the most memorable features of the competition is its friendly atmosphere. Competitors are invited to interact with each other and with the jury on a daily basis. The host families are all incredibly welcoming, involved, and caring. I met many incredible people at the competition that I still keep in touch with today.
I also really appreciated the structure of the competition, which gives the competitors the unique opportunity to showcase their abilities in a number of different settings. Before the first cuts, all competitors play two rounds, giving everyone the chance to prove themselves not just once, as in every other competition, but twice. The innovative chamber music round tests the competitor’s ability to play with other musicians, a skill vital to being a strong performer. The final round, involving a performance with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, is a fantastic experience and another opportunity to play with exceptional artists.
Additionally, the Michael Hill International Violin Competition has tremendous support from the general public, the media, and the founders of the competition, Mr. Michael Hill and his wife Christine who have been generous beyond belief. The competition attracts many great violinists around the world not only because of its location but also because of its distinguished jury, the opportunities it offers and the financial support that it provides for all attending competitors.
Thank you to Michael, Christine, Anne, and everyone else who made my experience at the Michael Hill International Violin Competition unforgettable!
